US 2016: Trump on the Couch

By J Brooks Specter

"In this chapter of the seemingly never-ending saga of this year’s American election, J. BROOKS SPECTOR puts Republican candidate Donald J. Trump on the psychiatrist’s couch to peer into his motivations and machinations. Be afraid".

The words "be afraid," on the end of that quote is incredibly revealing to the ways in which South Africans interpret Trump. Not only did they say we should be afraid, but they said we should be afraid as part of a larger article that analyzes Trump psychologically. The article goes on to say that Trump "may very well be suffering from an actual mental defect of some sort that should almost certainly disqualify him for the big prize," the big prize of course, being the position of President of the United States of America, one of the most powerful positions in the country and internationally.

Needless to say, this article questioning Trump's mental health because of the things he has said, doesn't bode well for South Africans being supporters. South Africa's own history may play into this, being a country that only just recently escaped tyranny and became a democratic state. While the country still has problems, South Africans tend to look down on dogmatic leaders like the ones they recently left behind.
