Russia's State Media: Anti-Clinton, But Not Wedded to Trump

Before the U.S. vote, Russia's biased state press has trashed Clinton, but avoided endorsing Trump
By Alexey Kovalev

This article looks at the ways in which Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton appeared in Russian news approaching the United States election. The piece interestingly points out that much time was spent following the Trump campaign, in fact, so much time that some news sources covered his activities more than they did their own elections happening at the same time, giving 8 minutes to their elections and nine to Trump.

The article makes very clear that Trump wasn't necessarily the first choice of Russian people to be the United States President, but Clinton was far from an options. The article states, "endorsements were largely absent from the more influential media. Indeed, RT, formerly Russia Today, was largely sympathetic to a Democratic contender, Bernie Sanders, and to third party candidates like Jill Stein. But when Sanders dropped out, RT threw its full weight behind discrediting Clinton," which was far more important to Russian journalists than supporting Trump.

While Russia's views on Trump may have been solidified since his time in office, during his campaign, Donald Trump was by far not a great choice for them. It was their hatred of Hillary Clinton as a candidate following the primaries that caused them to support him.
